Abstract

Cayenne pepper (Capsicum frutescens) is included in the horticultural commodity group which has important economic value, especially in Indonesia. Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) in 2021, cayenne pepper production in Indonesia will reach 1.39 million tons. This study aims to determine the effect of the type of growing media on the growth of cayenne pepper (Capsicum frutescens). This research was conducted at the Greenhouse of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, Mandalika University of Education, in April-May 2023. This is a true experimental research using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 4 treatments, 1 control (P0) with 5 replications in each treatment. The population in this study were 75 seeds of cayenne pepper sown from the Nirmala variety and the sample used was 25 cayenne pepper seedlings by using a purposive sampling technique. Data were analyzed using the One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test with a significant level (α) = 0.05. The results showed that there was no significant effect on stem height and leaf width of cayenne pepper plants, but had a significant effect on the number of leaves of cayenne pepper (Capsicum frutescens). The best results were found on P3 media with an average height of 7.2 cm, number of leaves 6.8 and width of 2.7 cm. It requires further research on providing an appropriate comparison between planting media and adding organic fertilizer.
